Posting on X, Modi said that the death of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji is extremely saddening. He was a talented entertainer and a versatile artist who entertained audiences across generations. Through his unforgettable performances, he brought laughter and joy to countless people throughout his life.

Recognizing the late actor’s immense contribution to Indian cinema, the Prime Minister expressed heartfelt condolences to his family and fans.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to Asrani, stating, “The passing of the esteemed actor Asrani Ji is truly heartbreaking. Throughout his life, Asrani Ji enriched Indian cinema and won the hearts of millions with his humor. May God grant strength to his family and admirers to endure this great loss. Om Shanti.”

Veteran actor and comedian Asrani passed away on Monday at the age of 84 following a long illness. His final rites were held at Santacruz Crematorium, attended by his family.

Speaking to ANI, Asrani’s manager Babu Bhai Thiba said, “Asrani left us today at 3 PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu. He is survived by his wife, sister, and nephew.”

Asrani’s Bollywood Career

Asrani enjoyed a prolific five-decade-long career, working with some of the biggest directors of each era. He shared the screen with legends like Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, and many others. Though an FTII graduate, he was often cast in comedic roles, frequently portraying the hero’s friend. He first gained attention with his performances in Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Chhoti Si Baat.

He made his Hindi film debut with the 1967 movie Hare Kaanch Ki Churiyan, with Hrishikesh Mukherjee serving as a mentor and guide. Asrani also appeared in several of Gulzar’s acclaimed films, including Mere Apne, Koshish, and Parichay. Other notable appearances include Bawarchi, Abhimaan, Do Ladke Dono Kadke, and Bandish.

He continued to showcase his flawless comic timing in films like Chupke Chupke, Rafoo Chakkar, Balika Badhu, Heeralal Pannalal, and Pati Patni Aur Woh. In the 2000s, he frequently collaborated with Priyadarshan on popular comedies such as Hera Pheri, Chup Chup Ke, Hulchul, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal.
