Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Sushila Karki on her appointment as the Prime Minister of Nepal on Saturday. He described her appointment as a “new beginning” for the Himalayan nation and praised her as a strong example of women’s empowerment. Modi emphasized that her achievement is not only significant for Nepal but also serves as an inspiration for promoting women’s leadership across the region. He highlighted that such milestones encourage greater participation of women in governance and decision-making, reflecting the growing role of women in shaping the future of their countries.
Addressing a rally in Manipur, Prime Minister Modi said, “On behalf of 1.4 billion Indians, I congratulate Sushila Karki ji on becoming the Prime Minister of Nepal. She is also an example of women’s empowerment. I am confident that she will pave the way for peace, prosperity, and progress in Nepal. This marks a new beginning for Nepal, and just as Lakshmi is considered a goddess of wealth, we firmly believe that Nepal will now experience peace.”
Following Nepal’s recent unrest, Sushila Karki’s appointment as the country’s first female Prime Minister marks a historic moment. Her leadership is celebrated as a milestone for women’s empowerment, gender equality, and democratic progress. Observers see her role as paving the way for peace, stability, and prosperity in Nepal.
Calling it a “new beginning for Nepal,” PM Modi expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations and regional cooperation under her leadership.
PM Modi also emphasized a widespread grassroots movement taking place across Nepal that has mostly remained under the radar.
“An interesting aspect of recent happenings in Nepal, often overlooked, is the active participation of the youth. For the last two to three days, young men and women have been seen on the streets, cleaning and painting with great dedication and a sense of purity,” he said.
“Another notable point in Nepal’s recent events, which hasn’t received much attention, is the commitment of young people. In the past few days, Nepalese youth have been working on the roads, cleaning and painting with sincere effort and dedication,” he stated.
“A remarkable yet overlooked element of recent developments in Nepal is the youth’s engagement. Over the past two to three days, young men and women have been on the streets, performing cleaning and painting tasks with dedication and a pure sense of responsibility,” he observed.
Nepal’s Parliament Dissolved as Karki Appointed Interim Prime Minister
On Friday, Nepal’s capital witnessed a major change when, just a few hours later, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as interim Prime Minister. This move came after days of protests, following the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and incidents such as fire breaking out in the parliament building.
“The Prime Minister has recommended the dissolution of parliament, and the elections are scheduled for March 5, 2026,” stated Kiran Pokharel, press advisor to President Ram Chandra Paudel, in a statement to AFP.
Sushila Karki, aged 73, was sworn in during a formal ceremony at the presidential residence, pledging to guide the nation through a six-month transitional period ahead of the general elections.
