Vidya Balan will soon step into Tamil films for the first time, sharing screen space with Rajinikanth after recently signing the project.

Rajinikanth’s Jailer turned out to be a blockbuster, earning an estimated Rs 605–650 crore at the global box office. Helmed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film went on to become one of the biggest hits in Kollywood. Riding high on the success of the first instalment, the makers are now gearing up for Jailer 2. In an exclusive update, Pinkvilla reports that Vidya Balan has officially come on board for the sequel.
According to a source close to the project, Vidya Balan has recently come on board Jailer 2 after being highly impressed by the script. The source adds that her role is pivotal to the narrative, portraying a powerful and multi-dimensional character that leads to a crucial turning point in the film. Her inclusion is expected to significantly elevate the intensity of the sequel.
Sources further reveal that the makers are eyeing a grand theatrical release for Jailer 2 on August 14, 2026, hoping to take advantage of the long holiday weekend, though the date is still under discussion. Notably, Jailer also hit theatres in August and went on to create box office history. With a strong ensemble and soaring expectations, the sequel is expected to be bigger and far more explosive.
Helmed once again by Nelson Dilipkumar and backed by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 will feature Rajinikanth returning as the much-loved Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The sequel will also boast special cameo appearances by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Nandamuri Balakrishna, and Mithun Chakraborty, enhancing its pan-India appeal.
The shoot of Jailer 2 kicked off on March 10, 2025, in Chennai and has since moved through multiple schedules in Palakkad and Goa. Several high-octane action sequences have already been filmed, with further portions slated to be shot till December 2025. The sequel will continue Muthuvel Pandian’s story, with the character reportedly taking on far bigger threats, promising intense action and blood-soaked confrontations.
