Speaking at an annual defense ministry gathering, Putin also blamed former U.S. President Joe Biden for deliberately triggering the war in Ukraine, asserting that European leaders immediately sided with the Americans.
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, prompting widespread Western sanctions and diplomatic isolation. President Vladimir Putin claimed that Russia has shown resilience in its economy, finances, political stability, and defense capabilities. He stated that Russia remains open to dialogue with Europe, but current European leaders make meaningful negotiations impossible.
Despite occasional statements expressing willingness to negotiate, the Kremlin has continued military operations and rejected peace proposals that require withdrawal from occupied Ukrainian territory, with Kyiv and its allies accusing Moscow of using talks as leverage rather than engaging in genuine diplomacy.
U.S. and Russian officials are scheduled to meet in Miami this weekend as part of efforts to end nearly four years of conflict between Kyiv and Moscow. Putin also praised the Russian military, asserting that no other army matches its capabilities and describing it as “battle-hardened.”
NATO chief Mark Rutte recently warned that member countries need to strengthen preparations for the possibility of a large-scale war, noting that Russia could be ready to launch an attack within the next five years. Meanwhile, Russian media reported that former Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev, now deputy head of Putin’s Security Council, referred to Western leaders as “little pigs” on his Telegram channel back in 2022.
Russia Dismisses European Threat Claims, Plans Military Offensive in 2026; Zelenskyy Urges Use of Frozen Assets Against Moscow
Russia has dismissed claims of posing a threat to Europe as “lies” and “nonsense,” accusing European nations of deliberately stirring hysteria over a potential attack on NATO territory. Currently, Moscow controls roughly 19 percent of Ukraine, including Crimea, most of Donbas, large areas of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, and smaller parts of other regions. Russia claims these areas as its own, a position rejected by Ukraine and largely unrecognized internationally.
Defence Minister Andrei Belousov said Russia plans to accelerate its offensive in 2026. He revealed that Moscow will spend 5.1 percent of its GDP on the war in 2025, reflecting the scale of the military operation. Belousov also accused European powers of attempting to undermine peace initiatives and openly discussing the possibility of future war with NATO, warning that such rhetoric creates conditions for continued military operations next year.

In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged allies to demonstrate that Russia’s war effort would ultimately fail. Ahead of a key EU summit, he renewed calls to use nearly $250 billion in frozen Russian sovereign assets held in Europe to support Ukraine. Meanwhile, U.S. officials are preparing additional sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector if Moscow rejects a peace deal, including measures against vessels linked to Russia’s shadow fleet and traders facilitating Russian oil exports.
