The Battle of Rezang La
On November 18, 1962, the Battle of Rezang La became one of the most remarkable chapters in Indian military history. Major Shaitan Singh, leading 120 brave soldiers of the 13 Kumaon Regiment, stood firm against an overwhelming Chinese force of nearly 3,000 to 5,000 troops in the freezing heights of Ladakh.
Outnumbered and cut off from artillery support, the Indian soldiers displayed unparalleled courage and determination. Under Major Singh’s inspiring leadership, they held their ground, fighting till their last breath to protect their motherland. The odds were impossible, yet their spirit never wavered.
Even after sustaining severe injuries, Major Shaitan Singh refused to abandon his post or accept evacuation. He continued to command his men until his final moments, setting an extraordinary example of leadership, patriotism, and sacrifice on the battlefield.
For his supreme bravery and indomitable courage, Major Singh was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. Of the 120 soldiers who fought, 114 laid down their lives, but their heroic resistance ensured that Ladakh remained in Indian hands. Rezang La continues to stand as an eternal symbol of honor, sacrifice, and national pride.
